How Is a Natural-Looking Dimple Created?
A dimple can add warmth, character, and a playful detail to your smile. Dimpleplasty creates a small connection beneath the cheek skin so an indentation appears. The key is not simply creating a dimple—it is placing one that looks at home on your face when you smile.
One Dimple or Two?
Some patients prefer one dimple for a subtle, individual feature; others prefer bilateral dimples for balance. Even naturally occurring dimples are not always perfectly symmetrical. Your smile movement, cheek fullness, facial proportions, and preferred visibility all influence placement.
How the Procedure Is Commonly Performed
The procedure is often performed through a small incision inside the mouth, avoiding an external cheek incision. A suture creates an attachment between deeper cheek tissue and the underside of the skin. Technique varies, and careful knowledge of nearby salivary ducts, nerves, muscles, and vessels matters.
Why the Dimple Looks Deep at First
An early dimple may be visible even without smiling and may look deeper than expected because of the suture and swelling. It generally softens as healing progresses and may become more dynamic. Final depth and visibility cannot be guaranteed.
Can It Fade or Need Revision?
Yes. A created dimple can become weaker, disappear, remain too deep, look asymmetric, or require correction. In a published series of 2,048 patients, 7.7% underwent reoperation, most often for undercorrection or disappearance. That result belongs to one surgical series and should not be treated as a universal clinic rate.
Risks and Aftercare
Possible complications include swelling, bleeding, infection, pain, scarring inside the mouth, asymmetry, overcorrection, undercorrection, recurrence or disappearance, salivary-duct injury, nerve injury, and revision. Oral hygiene and dietary instructions during early healing are important.
