Will Buccal Fat Removal Make My Face Look Slimmer?
If your lower cheeks stay full even at a stable weight, buccal fat removal may create a slimmer transition beneath the cheekbones. For the right face, the change can make the cheek and jawline look more defined. For the wrong face—or when too much is removed—it can look hollow as the face ages.
Where Is Buccal Fat?
The buccal fat pad lies deep within the cheek. It is different from superficial facial fat, jawline fat, a double chin, swelling, strong chewing muscles, or loose skin. A patient may describe all of these as “chubby cheeks,” which is why examination matters.
Who May Benefit?
A suitable patient may have persistent lower-cheek fullness caused substantially by prominent buccal fat, stable health and weight, realistic expectations, and facial proportions that can tolerate greater cheek definition.
Who Should Be Cautious?
Patients with a naturally narrow or already hollow face, significant facial laxity, certain medical conditions, or anticipated volume loss may not benefit. Facial fat commonly decreases with aging; removal that looks subtle today may contribute to a gaunt appearance later. Conservative treatment or no removal can be the better recommendation.
How Is It Performed?
A small incision is generally made inside the mouth. The surgeon carefully exposes and removes a selected amount of buccal fat before closing the incision. Because facial-nerve branches and a salivary duct are nearby, precise anatomy and controlled removal are essential.
Recovery and Results
Swelling can temporarily make the cheeks look fuller before definition appears. Patients may receive instructions for oral hygiene, diet progression, medicines, and activity. The contour develops gradually over weeks to months.
Risks to Understand
Possible risks include bleeding, infection, asymmetry, prolonged swelling, numbness, persistent pain, fluid collection, poor healing, injury to a facial-nerve branch or salivary duct, an overly hollow or minimal result, anesthesia complications, and revision.
Find Out What Is Really Creating the Fullness
What looks like “cheek fat” in a selfie may actually come from muscle, superficial fat, swelling, jaw shape, or loose skin. Your NDV MED team will examine the whole face before deciding whether buccal fat removal can give you the definition you want.
