How Do Wrinkle Relaxers Work—and Will I Still Look Like Myself?
Wrinkle relaxers are prescription medicines made from botulinum toxin. When placed into carefully selected muscles, they temporarily reduce the nerve signal that causes those muscles to contract. This can soften certain movement-related lines while preserving expression when the treatment is appropriately planned.
“Botox” is a brand name often used conversationally for the entire category. Other botulinum toxin products exist, and their formulations and dosing units are not automatically interchangeable.
Which Lines May Respond?
Wrinkle relaxers are commonly discussed for selected forehead lines, frown lines between the eyebrows, and lines around the outer eyes. Depending on the product, local authorization, clinician training, and individual anatomy, they may also be considered for other facial-muscle or medical concerns. Not every use is approved for every brand or jurisdiction.
Lines present mainly during expression often respond differently from deep lines visible at rest. Static lines may soften but may not disappear because skin quality and structural change also contribute.
What Happens During Treatment?
Your clinician assesses your face at rest and during movement, cleans the skin, and places small amounts into selected points. The number of injection sites and units is based on muscle strength, anatomy, treatment goal, product, previous response, and the need to preserve balance.
How Much Does Treatment Cost?
The amount depends on the treatment area, the brand or product used, the number of units required, muscle strength, and the individualized plan. Different brands use different unit systems, so price comparisons based only on “units” may be misleading. Your quotation will be provided after assessment.
When Will I See a Change?
The effect begins gradually rather than immediately. Many patients notice a change within several days, with fuller assessment commonly made around two weeks, although product and individual response vary. The effect often lasts several months and gradually wears off as muscle activity returns.
Will My Face Look Frozen?
The aim is controlled softening, not loss of identity. Expression depends on dose, placement, baseline anatomy, and which muscles are treated or left untreated. A conservative first session can be reviewed after the product has had time to take effect. More product is not always better.
Possible Side Effects and Risks
Temporary tenderness, redness, swelling, bruising, or headache can occur. Depending on the area, unintended weakness of a nearby muscle may cause asymmetry, a heavy brow, eyelid droop, smile change, or other functional and cosmetic effects. Rare systemic effects can include difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing and require urgent medical attention.
Tell your clinician about neuromuscular conditions, previous reactions, all medicines and supplements, pregnancy or breastfeeding, infection near the planned sites, and every botulinum toxin treatment received recently—even if it was performed elsewhere or for a medical reason.
Aftercare
Follow the instructions for your exact product and treatment. Common advice includes avoiding rubbing or firm pressure over treated areas immediately afterward. Recommendations about exercise, lying down, makeup, alcohol, and other activities vary, so use your clinician’s written guidance rather than general social-media rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can wrinkle relaxers prevent lines?
Reducing repeated movement may slow the deepening of selected expression lines, but aging also involves sun exposure, skin quality, bone, fat, and other tissues. Treatment cannot stop aging.
Can the result be reversed?
There is no routine instant reversal. The effect usually decreases as the medicine wears off. An unwanted effect should be assessed rather than treated at home.
Why did one side respond differently?
Faces and muscle strength are naturally asymmetric. Placement, dose, anatomy, prior treatments, and product response can contribute. Review should occur after adequate onset, unless you have an urgent symptom.
How often can I repeat it?
Timing is individualized. Re-treatment too soon may be unnecessary and may increase exposure. Your clinician considers return of movement, treatment goals, product guidance, and medical factors.

Build a Plan Around Your Anatomy
Tell your NDV MED physician what you notice, what you would like to preserve, and how much change feels right to you. Your consultation should explain the most appropriate category of treatment, realistic limitations, alternatives, aftercare, risks, and the complete quotation before you decide.
