How Long Do Silicone Breast Implants Last?
Silicone breast implants are designed for long-term use, but they should not be considered lifetime devices.
There is no automatic expiration date requiring every implant to be replaced after a fixed number of years. However, implant-related complications can become more likely over time, and some patients eventually need another operation.
Why Might Implants Need to Be Replaced?
- Implant rupture
- Capsular contracture
- Implant movement or malposition
- Changes in breast shape or symmetry
- Pregnancy, aging, or weight changes
- A desire for a different size
- A preference to remove the implants
- Another medical or implant-related concern
Depending on your circumstances, implants may be exchanged, repositioned, or removed—with or without a breast lift or another procedure.
How Do I Monitor My Silicone Implants?
Continue routine breast-health examinations and screening. Because silicone rupture can occur without obvious symptoms, periodic ultrasound or MRI may be advised.
Tell your mammography provider that you have implants. Contact your NDV MED team if you notice a sudden change in size or shape, firmness, pain, swelling, a lump, asymmetry, or changes in sensation.
Long-Term Care Matters
Breast augmentation should be considered an ongoing relationship with your medical team—not a one-time procedure. Your NDV MED team will guide you on implant care, screening, warning signs, and follow-up.
