Rhinoplasty Recovery—A Realistic Healing Timeline

Rhinoplasty results do not appear overnight.

Although patients often notice an immediate change when the nasal splint is removed, swelling can temporarily hide the finer details of the result. The nose continues to heal and refine over several months.

Understanding the general recovery timeline can make the experience feel more manageable.

The First Two to Three Days

Swelling, nasal congestion, discomfort, and bruising around the eyes may be most noticeable during the first few days.

Follow the medication and aftercare instructions provided by your medical team. You may also be advised to rest with your head elevated and avoid placing pressure on the nose.

Do not apply products, medication, ice, or pressure to the surgical area unless your doctor has specifically instructed you to do so.

The First Week

A splint may remain over the nose to protect its new structure during early healing.

The nose may feel blocked or stuffy. Swelling and bruising can also make its shape appear uneven during this stage. The appearance of your nose in the first week should not be judged as the final result.

Attend your scheduled follow-up appointments so the team can monitor your early recovery.

After One to Two Weeks

Depending on the procedure and individual healing, many patients begin returning to desk work, school, and light daily activities during this period.

Visible bruising may have improved, but swelling—particularly around the nasal tip—will still be present.

Some patients feel comfortable returning to social activities earlier than others. Give yourself enough time to recover without comparing your progress with someone else’s experience.

The Following Weeks

The nose gradually becomes more defined as swelling decreases.

Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, contact sports, and activities that could injure the nose until your surgeon confirms they are safe.

Eyeglasses and sunglasses may also place unwanted pressure on a healing nasal bridge. Ask your doctor when you may wear them normally.

The Following Months

More of the refined nasal shape becomes visible over time. However, subtle swelling may remain for several months, particularly around the tip.

In some patients, the final contour can take approximately one year to become fully apparent.
